Getting back into your body
Every single time you speak about something that is upsetting your nervous system gets activated.
But because we, humans, are so stuck in our heads and so out of touch with our bodies we barely notice when the nervous system is activated. Or we don’t even know what activation looks and feels like.
This is partly the reason why many of us still feel stuck in the same unhelpful behaviour, even after years of therapy.
Repeatedly talking about difficult and traumatic situations in a therapeutic setting, without discharging and regulating the nervous system produce very little or inconsistent results. And it can even be retraumatizing for some people.
An useful exercise you can do daily to start bringing your awareness back into your body, where emotions are felt, is to every time you have an uncomfortable thought or emotion to ask yourself:
“ Where does it sit in my body?”
No need to sit with it or do anything else. Just start to notice...
