If you want to heal faster you need to stop trying so hard (a few facts abut healing the nervous system on a deeper level)
When there is chronic stress in your system, from an early age, the parasympathetic nervous system is exhausted. This means the allostatic load (cumulative effects of chronic stress in the body) is also high.
Symptoms of allostatic overload can be many and it varies from person to person.
To name a few:
🔸Sleep disturbances.
🔸Low mood.
🔸Digestive issues.
🔸Impaired executive function.
🔸Blood pressure issues.
🔸Easily overwhelmed by life demands… etc…
In this state you are living through a “fake window” of tolerance. Your system has a set point of homeostasis within this window.
The aim of healing is to move the “needle”, creating a new healthier set point.
This work has to be done very gently and with a lot of titration (in very small chunks), otherwise the system will fight back strongly.
The tiniest shift in the set point can already provide improvement in the allostatic load.
Very often the improvements can be frustrating, because we think the symptoms that we want to fix first, doesn’t change at the rate we desire. Other unexpected improvements can happen first.
A key aspect of organic healing is that we can’t control the rate of healing and we can’t choose the parts of the system that will heal first.
If you insist on approaching your healing as a project, that can be managed with deadlines, you will put even more pressure in your already overwhelmed system.
It’s good, right and just to want to improve health and emotional capacity, so that you can face life challenges with self control and resilience. The confusion comes when we desire to control the rhythm of healing and think we can tell the body how it should heal itself.
Your system has its own wisdom. The mindset and attitude you bring to the table can make all the difference in supporting your system.
The confusion only sets in when we cling to the idea of control and pushing hard for certain outcomes. This is what can cause frustration and sometimes even despair.
The body heals faster when we allow the system to dictate the rate it reorganises itself.
We bring more gentleness and compassionate support and the body will do the rest.
