Too much emotional processing will end up in “self sabotage”
If you have been on a healing journey for awhile you have probably heard that you must sit with your feelings or that you have to emotionally process your past to be able to heal.
These beliefs can create so much confusion. If a person doesn’t have enough capacity in their nervous system to process their buried emotions they will most likely go back into old unhelpful patterns.
You see, self sabotage is not a thing. The coaching industry has sold this idea for so long that it has become a “truth”.
The truth is that what they call “self sabotage” is just self protective patterns that come up to help you deal with all the digging these outdated methods insist on guiding you towards.
When your system doesn’t have the capacity to process all the emotional baggage it will revert to familiar patterns. Familiarity feels safe. Even when what is familiar seems fruitless.
The solution?
Safety comes first. Start resourcing, start doing good solid nervous system regulation work, with a good “co-regulator” who can guide your system towards “discharge” of residual stress. This way your body and mind won’t freak out. They won’t fight so hard when you make positive changes.
See my highlights titled “Resources” to learn how to start resourcing.
