3 myths about trauma resolution and nervous system regulation
1) It’s possible to release trauma at will.
It’s so common to see Instagram reels of exercises and movements to repeat in order to “release” trauma. This trend can cause confusion.
It is not possible to “release” trauma at will. It’s true that resources are helpful and some of these exercises can be added to your resources’ list. We can give the body the conditions to help the body feel safer, but trauma integration is much more in-depth than just doing a set of exercises or following a set of fixed instructions.
2) Nervous system regulation is a silver bullet that will resolve all your issues.
Nervous system regulation is extremely important. It’s the base for the body to function smoothly and for emotional regulation. It can even resolve many issues for many people. But it can’t be construed as the reason for all problems in life. This creates false expectations and adds frustration to your journey.
You might need other approaches in addition to nervous system regulation and that’s ok.
3) Somatic healing is better than psychological approaches.
It’s wonderful that somatics and nervous system regulation is becoming more popular. It’s been the missing link for many of us. It was indeed a life saver for me, personally, and for so many of my clients.
But it’s important to realise that many people still benefit from talk therapy and other conventional approaches. And for many, having both talking therapy and somatic work is a good and needed combination.
