Anxiety is a sign of a nervous system that is “stuck” in sympathetic (fight/flight) response
Anxiety is like having your nervous system constantly holding a sign that says “DANGER, DANGER” when there is no real threat in sight.
Most people talk about anxiety as a psychological/mindset phenomenon. But I have seen many positive outcomes in myself (who had suffered from chronic anxiety for many years) and in others, once nervous system dysregulation is addressed.
The reasons why each person is suffering from anxiety will be different. It can have a very early cause, such as birth trauma, or unresolved childhood issues, such as your parents’s divorce or other difficulties experienced in childhood, or it could be due to a recent series of events causing chronic stress.
Regardless of how your anxiety started, the bottom line is that your nervous system is now “stuck” in sympathetic mode (fight/flight).
So wouldn’t it make sense to address the physiology? Instead of trying to figure out why you feel anxious?
Don’t get me wrong, understanding the why is valuable, and it is often part of the process as you tend to your nervous system.
When the body is not feeling safe the nervous system will expect threat, causing anxiety. And no amount of figuring out and knowing why will resolve this.
When we address the physiology, the mindset/psychological symptoms are more likely to follow suit.
The results?! A sense of ease within yourself, clear mind and more focus, feeling safe within your own body.
