Co-rumination vs co-regulation
Human beings are wired for connection. This need for connection is like air for infants. Children need food, clothes and shelter, but love, eye contact, empathy and connection with caregivers is equally important and crucial for healthy development of all human beings.
Attachment styles are formed roughly in the first 2 years of a child’s life. And from then on we continue to crave and search for deep connections with other human beings.
There are forms of connections that are not supportive towards healing.
Co-rumination is one of them.
Co-rumination is the habit of discussing and regurgitating problems and difficult feelings with someone else, without ever reaching practical solutions or resolution. This habit can hold us back from moving forward. Especially because this type of set up is never rooted in nervous system regulation. More often than not the friend or family member we are sharing with are not regulated themselves and will most likely fall into agreement with our shortcomings.
Co-rumination is linked to increased feelings of depression and anxiety.
Conversely, attuned co-regulation with other human beings is a healthy way to invite regulation to your nervous system and consequently resolution to a variety of issues.
Body, mind and soul crave this type of healthy connection. In attuned co-regulation we start to experience feeling seen by other human beings in a safe space.
Attuned co-regulation is what I strive to bring to my Open mic somatic group sessions. A space to just be, to reconnect with your body, seeing and sharing with others and being seen by others in a safe and supportive environment.
I offer 1 online group sessions every month. Please see my website, in my bio, for more details and dates. If this feels too scary this time, give yourself the opportunity to feel into this idea, and perhaps join us another time. There is no pushy or scarcity marketing with me. You are always welcome to join us in any of my future groups. ☺️
