Effective somatic work is not about releasing trauma or changing your behaviour

To start with, the work mainly centres in eliminating overwhelm.

If you have chronic health symptoms and/or chronic emotional difficulties this is a sure sign of your system being overwhelmed, even when you can’t notice yourself feeling overwhelmed.

🚩Overwhelm gets in the way of safety.

🚩Overwhelm prevents clear thinking.

🚩Overwhelm will convince you that you are not doing enough. That you need more interventions, which will only lead to more overwhelm.

🚩Overwhelm keeps you stuck in old unhelpful cycles.

🚩 Overwhelm interferes with your ability to connect to your body and your needs in healthy ways.

🚩Overwhelm prevents recovery.

But It’s not as simple as telling yourself to stop being overwhelmed. This won’t work.

It’s more about being in coregulation with someone safe, who knows how to titrate (doing it in small chunks) in unique ways for your unique system.

With these elements in place, your system can finally start to perceive safety.

Once your system start to realise that the trauma of the past is not happening in the present, it will be able to tap into its own felt sense of safety.

The overwhelm will then start to transform, because you will feel the safety within yourself in ways you have never felt before.

Without overwhelm, your physical and emotional symptoms will subside.

You will also have enough space in your system to allow organic integration of the sadness, the worries, the anger, the grief and all other deeper emotions and memories.

In the absence of overwhelm your system will reorganise and settle in an optimal healing space.
