Negative thought loops have emotional charge that are felt in the body. Contributing to feelings of anxiety, helplessness, distress, low mood, hopelessness, etc…
Negative thought loops are repetitive thought patterns on past negative experiences and also predicting negative outcomes for present and future.
It is a self protective mechanism. A clever way to avoid “danger”. It also helps to regain a sense of self control by trying to predict and control outcomes.
These thoughts have emotional charge that are felt in the body. Contributing to feelings of anxiety, helplessness, distress, low mood, hopelessness etc…
From a somatic perspective, negative thought loops are connected to unprocessed traumatic experiences “stuck” in the body in the form of fight/flight/freeze/shutdown states.
A body-mind loop of “stuckness” ensues:
Thought patterns that match the charge of negative emotions in the body and vice-versa.
In trauma resolution work, the first thing we do is work on nervous system regulation. This will translate into better regulated emotions as well.
We basically create more “space” in the body-mind system. And with more space we can finally start to have a felt sense of safety. With this, we are able to make better choices. Slowly, but surely, stop acting and reacting from a place of woundedness.
With more space you can also choose to challenge these thoughts. And as they lose their strong charge, you can even choose to let them be in the background, not allowing them to take over the show.
