Somatic exercise to help face stressful events
Many of us report feeling apprehensive before important meetings at work, a job interview or meeting new people.
Here is a simple somatic exercise that can help you with this.
Days before the event you can start to practice meeting the person, using your resources:
1) Sit in a comfortable place and position.
2) Find a place in your body that feels good.
3) Then try to truly feel the sensations, in the body (the place you chose in step 2).
4) Name, in your mind, 2 or 3 of the sensations that you feel in the body’s area of step 2. Remember to use the language of sensations.
5) Then bring the person and/or place/situation to mind. Notice what happens to your body when you bring them to mind. When you start to feel uncomfortable or anxious, bring your attention back to the area in step 2. If the area in step 2 doesn’t feel comfortable anymore, find another area.
Start to experiment with the above suggestion before the meeting. The main idea is to imagine the meeting/person while feeling a comfortable place in your body.
The results of this simple exercise can be different for everyone. It all depends on your anxiety levels, patterns, level of connection with your body, level of resilience and many other factors. But the objective is to start feeling more grounded and/or at ease around the event.
