The best way to support yourself in moments of irrational fears
The body and nervous system understand showing, not telling.
When visceral fear responses are activated, it's imperative to show your body that you are safe in the environment you are in (but only do this if in objective reality you are truly safe).
🔹Look around slowly using your neck (showing the body you are ok now and that the fear is a reaction to something from the past).
🔹While doing this you can also use words if you like. In a kind voice, you can speak out loud if you like, reassuring yourself.
🔹Remind yourself that the memories that are showing up, are implicit memories that are stored in your system, from another place and time. The triggers (even if you are not sure what they are) in the present moment are simply bringing these memories
up again.
🔹If you are able to stay in your body during this, feel your feet or sitting bone (if you are sitting).
🔹If staying in your body is too difficult, you can focus your eyes on something soothing outside of yourself. It could be an object in the room or a tree outside the window.
