Why do I find it hard to feel and to describe sensations in my body?

Many people when starting somatic healing work find it difficult to get in touch with emotions within their bodies.

Somatic work is a new language altogether. It invites a different way of being. It can sometimes feel too unsafe and too much to feel our sensations and that’s why we often retreat to our thoughts. This is a common survival strategy.

We can equate the language of sensations with learning a completely new language. The same way we don’t expect to learn how to speak and write in Spanish, from scratch, in a couple of weeks, we can’t expect to be able to feel and differentiate between sensations in a couple of sessions.

Everyone has their own way of perceiving and experiencing. Even if you find it difficult to feel sensations, it’s ok. There are many things we can work on/with in a session that will start to give you the base for you to feel safer and from there you can start to learn the language of sensations.

There is still plenty of progress happening and new skills being learnt in somatic sessions, even when you think you can’t pinpoint and feel your sensations.
