Why do I struggle to make positive changes in my life?

Long lasting change can never happen without a felt sense of safety.

It can be strange to even discuss safety. You might say: “ But I have a home, running water and food to eat; of course I’m safe. I’m not living in a war zone.”

There are many reasons why you might feel unsafe underneath the facade of a life with your basic needs covered.
But thankfully, knowing all the reasons is not necessary for healing.

For the mind it might seem illogical. But for a body living in survival mode, change can feel like a threat, even when the change is positive.

Your system likes familiar, because familiar patterns feel safe. You took years developing these patterns and successfully survived until now with them, and most probably because of them.

So when you want to change your body contracts, you hold tight to the old patterns; instead of implementing the ones. And the loop continues…

Safety is the missing link from all those years of therapy, coaching, self improvement tips and methods.

If you have been living in survival (from a nervous system perspective) what you need is to work on safety, then healthy new patterns can start to emerge more organically and you will finally have space in your system to implement the changes you have been wanting to for years.
