Your nervous system doesn’t understand cognitive language
Have you ever tried to tell yourself to calm down when you are feeling anxious?
Telling ourselves how we should be acting and feeling while in the middle of an activation (trigger) normally doesn’t work.
We need to show our nervous systems what feeling safe feels like.
As soon as you notice yourself getting activated (dysregulated), meaning in fight/flight/freeze, when the situation doesn’t warrant these responses. Instead of telling yourself what to do and what to feel.
Show yourself.
Use your resources.
The body and the nervous system need to be told via somatic (body) language.
Resource is anything you do by yourself or with another that helps bringing yourself to a sense of ease and safety.
