3 ways to connect with your emotions using somatics
We have been told so many times over the years to sit with our emotions. But how can we do it in a “productive” way?
Here is a simple exploration for you to try.
When you notice an emotion and you have time and space to explore it.
Ask yourself these 3 questions:
1) Where do I feel this emotion in my body?
Knowing where the emotion is makes it much easier to tend to it.
Emotions happen in your body, not on your mind.
2) What does this emotion feel/look like?
Using the language of sensations and your imagination, be open and curious to investigate more about it.
A shape, size or even a colour might come to mind - don’t take this too seriously and not too literal. Keep the curiosity going.
You can touch the area and feel. Notice if touching makes it feel better or worse? Does touch change the sensation?
These are just a few prompts. Make the most of your imagination using texture, colour, shapes and whatever naturally comes to mind, while you are connecting with the sensations in your body .
Notice how the area feels. Is it warm, cool, tight, contracted?
3) What would it feel like if I gave this emotion/sensation permission to stay?
See how your body reacts to this question.
This question will give you an idea of how you relate to this emotion/sensation.
What thoughts come to mind? Are you ok with this emotion/sensation? Are you rejecting it? What are your feelings about it?
If you decide to practice this, I would love to hear your experiences.
