Am I safe?
Your nervous system is constantly asking the question: “Am I safe”?
When you feel safe your nervous system promotes connection, good cognition and healthy physiological function.
When you feel unsafe fight/flight/freeze/shutdown responses will kick in, causing healthy physiological functioning to take a step back, operating at minimum level, so that your body can gather its energy for survival.
… That’s why when we have been living in a chronic state of stress and/or with unresolved trauma in our systems we start to display many undesirable symptoms, such as anger issues, anxiety, digestive issues, fatigue, feelings of depression etc…
Of course we can’t always be certain in all cases that symptoms are caused by nervous system dysregulation, and medical care shouldn’t be discarded.
But with everything we know regarding the nervous system it’s safe to say that nervous system regulation is key for optimal mental, emotional and physical health.
