Dissociation
☁️ Everyone has experienced times of daydreaming or mind wandering.
Dissociation is an organic response that allows for a disconnect from the here and now.
☁️ Dissociation is a coping mechanism that avoids negative thoughts or feelings related to unpleasant memories.
☁️ When we dissociate, we disconnect from our surroundings, which can ease trauma memories and lower fear, anxiety and shame.
☁️ Dissociation can happen during a traumatic episode or later on, when thinking about or being reminded of the trauma; including during treatment.
☁️ Dissociation happens unconsciously, as a natural survival response.
☁️ As your felt sense of safety increases, you will naturally be more present and comfortable in your body.
☁️ Experienced trauma-trained professionals see dissociation as a positive organic response and support it through using "Proximity Maintenance" to welcome the client back.
