Mindset work is overrated
We humans are so used to “work” on ourselves. To create strategy, to delete limiting beliefs, to receive coaching, to participate in retreats, to practice various meditation methods and and and...
But none of this will reap the benefits you expect long term because the foundation is missing.
The foundation is nervous system regulation and trauma integration, to heal your deepest wounds on a bodily level.
Trauma is not only related to big events or having abusive caregivers.
On a physiological level, anything that is too much for your nervous system to cope with can end up “stuck” in your system waiting for resolution.
In highly stressful situations your body will do whatever is needed to elicit the best reflexive response (fight/flight/freeze/shutdown) to keep you safe. But sometimes these responses are not able to complete themselves; staying in your body (muscles, fascia, organs and cells) as a memory waiting for “release”.
Mindset work and cognitive approaches don’t address trauma and when they do, they don’t reach deep enough in the parts of the brain where these memories are stored.
Cognitive based approaches work with the part of the brain called Prefrontal cortex.
Deep trauma work engages this part of the brain as well, to solidify the healing. But it also, and mainly, accesses the reptilian brain and the limbic system. These parts of the brain are linked to the nervous system. The whole body is engaged in this deep type of work.
So while people get busy with Mindset work and cognitive approaches they don’t realise that the rulers of the house ( reptilian brain, limbic system and the autonomic nervous system) are still in charge regardless of how much mindset and cognitive work you have done.
Dare to start at the base.
You won’t regret it! And then most things will fall into place, including your mindset work.
