New Year resolutions feel like a threat to your system
We have all gone through this. Made numerous resolutions in the new year only to give up a couple of weeks later.
There is a simple trick to start a new supportive habit in a way that is non threatening to your brain and nervous system.
Setting up a resolution that is too far off from your current reality is a recipe for disappointment.
For instance, if you say you will start to go to the gym every day in the new year when you haven’t even managed to establish a 2 or 3 times a week simple movement routine for yourself, will send your brain and nervous system into a state of overwhelm.
It’s important to build capacity and resilience in your system with small steps first.
Long lasting habits are built with small steps.
Instead of setting up huge intentions do it step by step and celebrate the small achievements.
So instead of saying “I will go to the gym every single day”, establish a small routine that you can commit to. Perhaps 15 minutes exercise twice or three times a week instead. Then do it for a little awhile and acknowledge your achievement on that, then slowly keep on increasing your goals.
You will be surprised of how many supportive habits you can achieve in a few months by choosing to start small.
